I came up with 8 questions for the kids to just search on. They worked in groups to just find things in the United States. This was with 3rd graders. Here are the questions:

Names in your group:

1. Type in Chimney Rock, NE what town is it in?
2. When you type in Gulf of Mexico what state do you get?
3. How many volcanoes are listed in the state of Wyoming?
4. What city and state are listed by Saint Anthony Falls?
5. Name one town close to Chicago, IL.
6. Name one volcano on the island of Hawaii.
7. When you type in Yankton, SD what historical island do you see?
8. If you type Noyes, what Country do you see?

It was great for group work and beginning Google Earth! Copy and paste and add more of your own!

Attach a hyperlink to a placemark
that would point to other files and folders with information about the placemark. A placemark for a cell site could then link to drawings, pictures, technical documents etc.

Fractions Quiz in Google Earth

icon Idea:

A series of Placemarks which can be either localized, regional or global. Placemarks could be placed in folders and would contain questions such as:

Add a placemark on the house that is 4/5 of the way from the school to the store. Questions could also be Fraction computations (1/3 + 1/2)(or 25% of the way from Montreal to Toronto, etc).

Students would then turn in their placemark collections for grading. By activating the 'Master' collection the teacher would have a fast visual representation of the student's accuracy by comparing placement of the placemarks.

The US Library of Congress has a huge collection of maps. Some of my favorites are the old panoramic maps where the towns are drawn in '3D'.

It might be interesting for students to use images from the library in creating overlays to show population growth and development over time.

The collection can be browsed at:
